Tools for annotation and collaboration

Suw showed how the Open Rights Group had allowed their supporters to annotate a document about copyright reform in the UK, and you were asking more information about how to create a system to allow people to comment on blocks of text such as a public document. I’ve actually been doing some work on a project like this so here are some background and some of the latest tools and services you could use to do something similar.

Developer Jack Slocum wrote one of the first versions of this type of commenting system, and as Suw said, it was adapted to help write the Django Book, a guide to using the Django web framework. The system allows you to comment on each “block” of text, each paragraph. Another amazing system was created to comment on a draft of the GPL, one of the most popular open-source licences. That commenting system not only allowed comments on blocks of text but comments on each and every word. The darker the shading on the text, the more comments were left on that block of text or word.

The commenting system has been released under an open source licence and is available as a service on Co-ment. The terms of use are very open and the cost for using the service is very low. After uploading the documents to Co-ment, you can easily embed the document including the comment system on your site. You can moderate the comments, approving them before they appear on the document. Co-ment is releasing a new version soon.

A.nnotate.com is another online annotation service. Licences start at $9.95. For public service projects, you might also consider Write To Reply. Document hosting site Scribd is also developing an annotation service. Hope that helps, and feel free to ask questions in the comments.

It’s hard to do, and it’s quite possible you’ll go a long time without really getting one started, but the dynamics are very similar to this video, which I found via the excellent and very funny Succeed Blog (http://www.succeedblog.org).
